Techniques were developed to put more and more complex circuits on the same chip, evolving into medium scale integration (MSI). Since these circuits are more reliable, cost less, and use less power than the transistors equivalents, they are easier and chiper to use. These circuits have found widespread use in the electronics world.
The evolution of the large scale integration (LSI) circuits opened the door for microprocessors.Developing the LSI capability required new concepts in circuits, manufacturing methods, and testing. New techniques were developed to improve the yield of the manufacturing and testing processes. All this required hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of engineering and development time.
